Week 9: Participation — Microblogging & Lifestreaming

31 October 2010 | Filed under: Lifestreaming, Microblogging, Week 9 | Comments Off

Welcome back, everyone! I hope you all had a great research week last week. We’re on to week 9 — this week we’re looking at participation in microblogging and lifestreaming apps and this week’s lecture specifically tackles the notion of the real-time web. I have to confess that the examples in this week’s lecture are stale because I’ve had to use the lecture I did on the topic a few months ago. Vimeo is having some issues and won’t let me upload the lecture I just recorded (content is the same, just updated the examples), so I thought it best to go with a previous version for now. I’ll keep at it and let you know if I have success uploading the new lecture!

As usual, I’ve included all the links visited below the video embed. Don’t forget to check out the content page for this week for the complete run-down of readings, case studies, to-dos and reminders.

Happy Hallowe’en!

Final Project Proposals

31 October 2010 | Filed under: Course Details | Comments Off

Just a reminder: your final project proposals are due tomorrow, Monday, November 1st at noon. Thanks to those of you who have already sent theirs in. And to those who haven’t yet, please make sure to submit your proposals using Google Docs. Here are the relevant bits from the syllabus:

Formatting of Submitted Assignments: Please include your name, student number, and email address on the first page/covering page of your submission. Please also make sure that all electronically submitted assignments (see next section) are saved with your first and last names in the file name.

Submission Guidelines: If you are submitting a paper or any sort of attachment, please submit it using Google Docs (no email attachments please). If you don’t already have an account on Google Docs, set one up and upload your paper there. Then add me (etchesjohnson AT gmail.com) as a collaborator so I can post comments to your assignment online. Finally, please send me an email letting me know that you’ve shared a document with me so I know to look for it.

Questions? Leave a comment or get in touch. Thanks!

Just a quick reminder (as if you needed one!) that next week is research week at FIMS. Which means no classes, no weekly chat, and no weekly posting deadline! I will be around and online all week if you need to contact me for anything.

Hope you all have a restful week!

Welcome to social networking week! Here’s this week’s slideshow (22:44) and I’ve included all links visited during the slideshow below the embed. Once again, don’t mind the audio cutting in abruptly at the beginning of the video (working on it!).

We have another group project coming our way this week, courtesy of Emily, Katie, Peggy, Stephanie, and Alain. I’ll post a link to it when it’s up on Friday.

And one last reminder: please fill in the FIMS Student Council midterm survey if you haven’t already!

Have a great week, everyone.

Graded!

16 October 2010 | Filed under: Course Details | 2 Comments »

Hi everyone — if you’ve had your eye on your UWO email inbox in the past few hours, you should have seen a message or two from me! I just wanted to let everyone know that I’ve sent out all midterm blogging progress reports (you’re all doing great!) and grades for your crowdsourcing assignments (such interesting insights!). As I’ve mentioned to a few of you over the past couple of days, I had hoped to get the blog progress reports out earlier this week, but time and deadlines conspired against me. Thanks for understanding!

So check your inboxes for messages from me and let me know if any have gone astray. I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend!

Week 6: Collective Intelligence — Folksonomies

11 October 2010 | Filed under: Folksonomies, Week 7 | 3 Comments »

Welcome back! Hope everyone had a great long weekend. This week we’re on to folksonomies and here’s your short slideshow for the week (10:39). I’ve posted the links/references from the video below the embed. I had a spot of trouble with audio right at the beginning of the slideshow — you will hear a slight skip in the audio, but it only accounts for about 1.8 seconds and doesn’t actually miss much!

I’ve added a couple of reminders to this week’s content page, so don’t forget to have a read through.
