Hi Dayna,

I love your idea and I hope the library community makes use of your wiki. I created a wiki as well for a larger audience, also with the idea of sharing ideas and information though mine is for the public library world. Good luck in your career! I enjoyed working with you this semester.

This is a great point Dayna! I really like your last paragraph. A new service needs to be developed by people who are passionate and enthusiastic! That's what gives it life. If you're not passionate about what you're offering to your library community, you'll end up with "the sad little seldom updated library Facebook page."

Good point, Dayna. Buy-in does seem to be a two way street. I think most often this is why libraries DO reside in the area of mediocrity. We need more sweet talkers that can convince the right people to invest fully in a project.

I agree that buy-in is so important for change. WIth Web 2.0 in libraries, I think you will always have people who are hesitant or who have done something one way for 30 years and don't see the need to change! I really liked the Sierra article as well. I thought her point about user buy-in was wonderful: they'll love it or hate it, but at least they feel strongly about it! Your post was nicely balanced and I agree that sometimes you just have to throw everything you have at something to make changes and improvements.

Buy-in is the biggest challenge with change. I remember hearing somewhere that you should aim for a 20-60-20 balance. 20 percent of people who are on board and excited, 60 percent of people who are mostly indifferent, and 20 percent who are vehemently against it. If the latter 20 percent is especially vocal, they can skew the opinions of the 60. The goal is to at least get an equal number to be enthusiastic for the change to counter-balance that.

I don't mind at all! You're right - a bad facebook page definitely hurts a library - it's not neutral.

Love the new title for your co-worker! I shared your post with Mum as I am sitting at the dining room table with her in the kitchen behind me. I hope you don't mind. I have a feeling that more than one library administrator or library board may not give social media a chance if the person they assign does not succeed with his/her initial attempt at communicating in the virtual realm. The library may do themselves more harm than good if the library's page falls flat. I know that I am constantly learning new things in this area.

Hi Dayna,

Great commentary! I totally agree with you about the image question as it applies to libraries and librarians. If we do a good job of serving our patrons whether at the library or out in the larger world then we will be remembered and appreciated. I don't have a Canadian library Twitter example, but now I will go look for one.
